I grew up in a coal mining community in the eastern mining region of South-Limburg.
At first, it brought prosperity, then physical illnesses such as lung problems, and after the coal mines closed, most people fell into poverty and many young people became addicted to alcohol and various drugs.
Nevertheless, there was unity among the miners because of their shared hard life and good friendships.
Unfortunately, in the 1970s, I lost many good friends between the ages of 15 and 21 to the meaninglessness of life at that time, and they thought that alcohol and drugs were a way out, an escape, but unfortunately not to a better life.
